A marine oil purifier cleans fuel and lubricating oil by centrifugal separation. Oil is fed into a bowl spinning at several thousand revolutions per minute, which generates a force many thousands of times stronger than gravity. A stack of closely spaced conical discs inside the bowl divides the flow into thin layers, multiplying the effective settling area, so water and solids that would take hours to settle in a tank are thrown to the bowl periphery in seconds. Clean oil migrates inward to the clean oil outlet, separated water forms a layer at the bowl wall and discharges continuously, and sludge packs into the sludge space until the self-cleaning bowl opens briefly at timed intervals and ejects it to the sludge tank without stopping the process.

Separation quality depends on three things you control. First, temperature: heavy fuel oil should reach about 98 degrees C at the purifier inlet, and system lubricating oil around 90 degrees C, because lower viscosity and a bigger density difference between oil and water sharply improve separation. Second, throughput: run the feed well below the rated maximum, since a slower flow gives each particle more residence time; with heavy fuel it is normal to run two separators in series or parallel at reduced feed. Third, the oil-water interface position: on conventional machines this is set by choosing the correct gravity disc for the oil density, while ALCAP-type machines monitor water in the clean oil and discharge it automatically.

The main enemy is catalytic fines, hard aluminium and silicon particles left over from refinery cracking. Bunker specifications permit up to 60 mg/kg of aluminium plus silicon, but engine makers want under 15 mg/kg at the engine inlet, and efficient purification is the only barrier. Cat fines embed in cylinder liners and rapidly wear liners, rings and fuel pumps, so poor purifier performance shows up later as scuffing and high liner wear.

On watch, look for these symptoms: - Oil carrying over to the water or sludge outlet, usually a broken water seal or wrong gravity disc. - Water in the clean oil, pointing to low temperature, excessive feed or a worn disc stack. - Abnormal vibration, which means stop immediately, as an unevenly sludged bowl at full speed is dangerous.

Treat the purifier as high-speed rotating machinery: assemble the bowl exactly to the manual, respect lock ring match marks and tightening torques, never bypass the vibration trip, and escalate to the chief engineer if separation cannot be restored, because running an engine on badly purified fuel costs far more than stopping to fix the separator.
