Jacket cooling water is the treated fresh water circulated through the cast passages, or jackets, surrounding the cylinder liners, cylinder heads and exhaust valve housings of a marine diesel engine. Combustion gas temperatures reach well over 1500 degrees C, far beyond what the liner and head material could survive without continuous cooling, so the jacket water must carry heat away fast enough to protect the metal while keeping it hot enough for clean, efficient combustion.

The circuit is closed: pumps circulate the water through the engine, then through a cooler served by the central cooling system, with a thermostatic three-way valve holding the engine outlet typically around 80 to 90 degrees C on large engines. Temperature control is a genuine balance. Run too cold and the liner walls fall below the acid dew point of the combustion gases, so sulphuric acid condenses and causes cold corrosion of the liner, and combustion suffers. Run too hot and the oil film on the liner degrades, scuffing follows, and heads and liners can crack from thermal stress. This is why jacket water is preheated, typically to 60 degrees C or more, before starting a heavy-fuel engine, and why sudden load changes are avoided.

The water itself must be distilled or good-quality fresh water dosed with corrosion inhibitor, commonly nitrite-borate based, and tested weekly. Untreated water pits the water spaces and deposits scale, which insulates exactly where heat flow is highest. Watch for these routine signs:

  • Falling expansion tank level: a leak, possibly into a cylinder (check for water in the scavenge space or crankcase) or from a cooler.
  • Oil sheen in the expansion tank: an oil cooler or cylinder head leak.
  • Rising outlet temperature on one unit only: a fouled or restricted passage, or local overload.
  • Pressure fluctuation or repeated venting: combustion gas leaking into the water through a cracked head or liner, which needs prompt investigation.

The jacket system usually earns its keep twice: the hot water leaving the engine drives the fresh water generator, producing distilled water from seawater under vacuum, and may serve other heating loads. Keep the treatment in range, the temperature steady, and investigate any unexplained water loss immediately; a neglected jacket system shortens liner life more surely than almost anything else in the engine room.
