A DPO's job is to keep a vessel exactly where it needs to be without an anchor, using thrusters and propulsion under computer control to counter wind, current and wave forces continuously, and the stakes attached to getting it wrong, a drift-off or drive-off during diving, drilling or lifting operations, are high enough that the role carries real responsibility from the first watch.

The DP system works from position-reference sensors, commonly differential GPS, and often backed up by acoustic, laser, or taut-wire systems so that no single reference is relied on alone, feeding into a DP computer that calculates the thrust needed from each thruster and azimuthing unit to hold position and heading. The DPO's watch is spent monitoring these references for disagreement or drift, watching the environmental sensors for wind and current changes, keeping an eye on the power management system since losing a generator or a bus tie can suddenly reduce available thrust, and staying ready to intervene, switch reference systems, adjust the DP mode, or take manual control, the moment something looks wrong.

Training follows the internationally recognised scheme built in stages: an induction course covering DP theory and basic operation, a period of supervised sea time logged in a DP logbook, a simulator or advanced course, and further sea time before a DPO certificate is issued, all built on top of an existing watchkeeping certificate of competency, so the practical entry route is to qualify as a deck officer first and then specialise into DP.

Vessel types where DPOs work include platform supply and anchor-handling vessels, offshore construction and heavy-lift vessels, drillships and semi-submersibles, cable-lay and pipe-lay ships, and dive support vessels, each with its own DP class reflecting how much redundancy the vessel and its DP system carry, since a vessel working over a live wellhead or with divers in the water needs enough independent, separated systems that a single failure cannot cause loss of position.

The pay and demand the role commands are real, driven by the specialised training pipeline and the offshore sector's willingness to pay for a scarce, safety-critical skill, but it also means a DPO is expected to understand not just button-pushing but the underlying principles of thruster allocation, consequence analysis, and the vessel's DP capability for the conditions, so that a genuine emergency, not a drill, is handled calmly and correctly the first time.
