An electro-technical officer, or ETO, is a specialist officer in the engine department responsible for the ship's electrical, electronic and automation systems. The role earned formal international status through the 2010 Manila Amendments to the STCW convention, which created a defined certificate of competency for ETOs (regulation III/6) and for electro-technical ratings (III/7), giving the job a recognised training path and worldwide portability.

The ETO's territory is broad and growing. It covers power generation and distribution: alternators, switchboards, circuit breakers and protection relays; motors, starters and variable speed drives throughout the ship; the automation, alarm and monitoring systems that make unmanned machinery spaces possible; navigation and communication electronics; and increasingly the networks and software that tie modern machinery together. On cruise ships, offshore vessels and gas carriers with electric propulsion, the ETO also works on high voltage systems, typically at 3.3 to 11 kilovolts, where dedicated high voltage safety training, switching programmes, isolation, earthing and sanction-to-work documentation are core parts of the job, because an error at those voltages is not survivable in the way a 440 volt mistake might be.

Candidates typically come through an electrical or electronic engineering education combined with approved maritime training and sea service, then certification by their administration. The day-to-day work runs from planned maintenance on breakers and insulation testing, through fault finding on control loops and drives, to keeping the alarm and monitoring system honest, and the ETO works hand in hand with the engineers, since almost every mechanical system on a modern ship has an electrical and control dimension.

Demand for the rank keeps rising for structural reasons: shore power connection, battery and hybrid installations, ballast water treatment systems, more capable automation, and the general shift of shipboard engineering toward electrical power all need people genuinely at home in the field. Complex tonnage cannot sail without a competent ETO, and experienced ETOs move readily into commissioning, service engineering and superintendent roles ashore.

For someone weighing the career: if your aptitude runs to electrical machines, electronics and control rather than combustion and heavy mechanics, the ETO route offers a specialised path with strong employability. Be aware that promotion differs from the engineer ladder; the ETO is a specialist rank rather than a step toward chief engineer, though some administrations allow conversion toward engineer certificates with additional sea time and examinations. Either way, the depth of the specialism is the attraction: on a modern ship, electricity is no longer auxiliary.
