Turbocharger surging is an unstable reversal of airflow through the compressor, heard as a loud barking, howling or coughing from the machine, and it means the compressor has been pushed across the surge line of its operating map. The compressor can no longer deliver air steadily against the pressure standing in the scavenge receiver, the flow momentarily breaks down and reverses, then re-establishes, and the cycle repeats. Each cycle hammers the bearings, the blading and the thrust arrangement, so surging is never something to shrug off.
The causes fall into two groups. The first is fouling or restriction anywhere in the air or gas path, which slowly moves the operating point toward the surge line: blocked suction filters, a dirty compressor and a choked charge air cooler on the air side, and a fouled turbine, nozzle ring, exhaust gas boiler or uptake on the gas side. Heavy fuel operation makes turbine-side fouling a fact of life. The second group is sudden or abnormal load change: rapid manoeuvring, the propeller racing in heavy weather, a misfiring or cut-out cylinder, faulty injection on one or more units, or crash astern movements. Damaged turbine blades or nozzles, and a turbocharger badly matched to the engine after modifications, produce chronic surging.
When it happens, reduce load until the surging stops and let conditions stabilise, informing the bridge if power must stay reduced. Then hunt the cause systematically:
- Check air filter and charge air cooler differential pressures against the clean baseline.
- Compare scavenge pressure at a given rpm with the sea trial or performance records; a falling trend shows fouling.
- Scan the exhaust temperatures for a misfiring or overloaded unit and correct it.
- Clean the turbine and compressor by water washing or dry cleaning as the maker allows, and clean the air coolers and filters.
- Check the exhaust gas boiler gas-side pressure drop, a commonly forgotten restriction.
An occasional single bark during a fast manoeuvre or in a heavy seaway is not unusual, but repeated or continuous surging in steady steaming is abnormal and will eventually wreck the rotor. Prevention is routine: regular turbine and compressor washing, air cooler cleaning, filter renewal, good combustion on every unit, and keeping performance records so a slow drift toward the surge line is caught months before the first bark. If surging returns immediately after cleaning, suspect mechanical damage or matching and involve the maker before running on.
