Why take the Electrical Technical Officer (ETO) course?
Are you looking for a career in seafaring? Why not take advantage of the ETO scholarship to specialize in marine electronics training? The need for electrical officers on merchant ships is increasing as ships grow in size and technological advancements continue.
During your training (three years and five phases, split between theoretical and practical training), your tuition fees will be fully paid, and you will receive a minimum of £800 per month in funding.
Electrical technicians are responsible for maintaining and repairing systems that contain electronic components. This includes complex control systems in the engine room, as well as radar and electronic chart systems on the bridge. Economic and Trade Offices are also involved in shipping operations, and the scope of their tasks varies depending on the type of vessel being transported.
You will be ranked according to your experience and qualifications, with each level bringing more responsibility. As an electrical apprentice, you will start at the bottom and work your way up:
Senior Technical Officer (STO): This position supervises the STO team on board and is responsible for overseeing the maintenance of all electrical and electronic equipment.
OET – Maintains a wide range of complex electronic and electrical equipment, taking on technical challenges such as troubleshooting.
The Electrical Technician position is relatively new in the industry, so the duties of both junior and senior Electrical Technicians may vary depending on the type of vessel.
If this career is not for you, there are other career options in the Merchant Navy .
