Full Definition
The IMO was established in 1948 and became operational in 1959, headquartered in London. Its 175 member states set global standards through conventions including SOLAS, MARPOL, STCW, the ISPS Code, MLC (jointly with ILO), and the Hong Kong Convention. Principal technical committees are MSC (Maritime Safety Committee) and MEPC (Marine Environment Protection Committee). IMO instruments are given effect through national legislation by flag states.
