BIMCO

BIMCO, the Baltic and International Maritime Council, is a membership organisation that represents a very large share of the world's merchant fleet through its shipowner, operator, manager, broker and agent members. Founded in the early twentieth century and headquartered in Denmark, it exists to serve the practical interests of the shipping industry, providing its members with expertise, information and, above all, the standardised documentation that keeps the commercial side of shipping running smoothly. Its role is industry-facing and commercial, distinct from the regulatory role of the IMO, though BIMCO engages with regulators on behalf of its members.

BIMCO's most influential work is the drafting and publication of standard maritime contracts and clauses. Charter parties, bills of lading, and a wide range of agreements for towage, ship management, sale and purchase, and other transactions are published in BIMCO forms that are recognised and used worldwide. Standard forms such as GENCON for voyage charters and NYPE for time charters, together with countless individual clauses covering matters from bunkers and piracy to sanctions and emissions, give the industry a common, well-tested language for contracts. Because these documents are drafted by experts and refined over time, they reduce disputes and negotiating time, and their wording is familiar to brokers, lawyers and arbitrators everywhere.

Beyond documentation, BIMCO supports its members with contract advice, market and regulatory information, training and education, and technical and operational guidance. It contributes an industry voice to debates on regulation, the environment, security and trade, and it maintains widely used references such as standard definitions of laytime terms. For a ship operator, BIMCO is both a practical toolkit (the source of the contracts used every day) and a representative body that advances the collective interests of shipping, which is why it sits at the centre of the industry's commercial and legal infrastructure.
