Full Definition
Container ships carry ISO containers (primarily 20-ft TEU and 40-ft FEU) in vertical cell guides in the holds and on deck. Size categories range from Feeder (<1,000 TEU) through Panamax (~5,100 TEU) and New Panamax (~14,500 TEU) to Ultra Large Container Vessels (ULCV, >18,000 TEU). The container revolution pioneered by Malcolm McLean in 1956 transformed global trade by dramatically reducing cargo-handling costs and enabling intermodal logistics.
