Container Ship

Container ships transformed world trade by carrying goods in standard steel boxes that move seamlessly between ship, rail and road without the cargo itself being handled. The ship is built around this idea: its holds are divided into cell guides (vertical steel rails that slot each container precisely into place) and containers are also stacked and lashed in tiers on deck. This cellular arrangement lets a terminal load and discharge thousands of boxes in a single port call using shore-based gantry cranes, achieving turnaround times that would be impossible with loose cargo.

Capacity is measured in twenty-foot equivalent units, or TEU. The fleet ranges from small feeder ships of a few hundred to a couple of thousand TEU, which distribute boxes among regional ports, up to the ultra-large container vessels exceeding 24,000 TEU that run the main east–west trade lanes between Asia, Europe and North America. Stowage is a complex planning task: the load must be balanced for stability and hull stress, refrigerated containers need power connections, dangerous goods must be segregated, and boxes must be ordered so that those for the next port are accessible.

Container ships run to tight liner schedules on fixed routes, unlike the tramp trading of many bulkers and tankers, so punctuality and port productivity are central to their economics. Their great stacks of deck containers create a large windage area and demand careful lashing, because containers lost overboard in heavy weather are a recognised hazard. The relentless growth in ship size has driven investment in deeper ports, larger cranes and bigger canal locks, and the container ship remains the backbone of the global supply chain for manufactured goods.
