Full Definition
The IMO ship identification number is assigned under SOLAS regulation XI-1/3. It comprises 'IMO' followed by seven digits; the seventh is a check digit computed from the first six. The number remains with the ship throughout its life regardless of flag, name, or ownership changes, providing a tamper-resistant identity used by PSC, port authorities, AIS databases, and insurers.
