Full Definition

Mandatory under SOLAS Chapter IX since 1998 (passenger ships) and 2002 (cargo ships ≥500 GT), the ISM Code requires companies to establish an SMS covering safety and environmental policy, a Designated Person Ashore (DPA), procedures for all key shipboard operations, emergency preparedness, and internal auditing. Compliance is evidenced by a Document of Compliance (DOC) issued to the company and a Safety Management Certificate (SMC) issued to each ship by the flag state.
