Full Definition
LOA is the total distance from the furthest point of the bow to the furthest point of the stern. It is the key dimension for determining whether a vessel fits in a berth, dry dock, lock, or canal. LOA differs from LBP (length between perpendiculars), used in stability and structural calculations. Canal and port berth restrictions are stated in LOA and beam limits (e.g., New Panamax: LOA 366 m, beam 49 m, draught 15.2 m).
