Full Definition
The International Convention for the Safety of Life at Sea is the most important international treaty on merchant ship safety. First adopted in 1914 after the Titanic disaster, the current version was adopted in 1974 and amended frequently. SOLAS covers ship construction, fire protection, life-saving appliances, GMDSS, navigation safety, cargo carriage, ISM Code, and ISPS Code. Compliance is monitored by flag states and enforced through Port State Control.
