Full Definition
Under a voyage charter, the owner bears operating and voyage costs (fuel, port dues); the charterer pays freight per tonne, per TEU, or as a lump sum, and bears loading/discharging costs unless specified otherwise (FIO/FIOS/FIOST). The owner must provide a seaworthy vessel and prosecute the voyage with reasonable dispatch. GENCON is the most widely used general voyage charter form. Laytime, demurrage, and dispatch are the key commercial variables.
