One of the most important battles of the Pacific War began on 4 June 1942, when Japanese aircraft launched a bombing raid on Midway, a group of islands controlled by the US. Here are facts about the battle of Midway :

1. US intelligence knew the attack was coming.

The Japanese Navy’s universal cipher system used a book code, which was easier to break than the German Enigma and Lorenz codes. As a result, the US military was alerted earlier in the year that Japan was planning an attack.

2. The commander of the attack on Midway was the same man responsible for the attack on Pearl Harbor.

Chuichi Nagumo committed suicide during the subsequent Battle of Saipan. Chuichi Nagumo was a vice admiral in the Japanese Navy and commander of the Japanese First Air Fleet. After the successful attack on Pearl Harbor, he commanded all raids in the Pacific and Indian Oceans.

3. This was one of two simultaneous attacks by Japan.

When the Battle of Midway began, the Japanese were also trying to invade the Aleutian Islands. Some believe that the purpose of the attack on the Aleutian Islands was to draw American forces away from Midway so that the Japanese could invade.

4. The United States was still recovering from the blow of the Pearl Harbor attack.

The surprise attack in 1941 severely damaged the U.S. Air Force and Navy. All eight of the Navy's battleships were damaged, two were completely sunk, and the rest were decommissioned. This meant that the United States had no ships to participate in the Battle of Midway.

6. The Japanese victory was expected.

Due to their numerical superiority, many believed the Japanese would win the battle and invade Midway. The Japanese Navy had never lost in more than fifty years.

7. Yet the United States prevailed.

Despite the absolute numerical disadvantage of American warships, American intelligence and careful planning ultimately won the United States a decisive victory.

8. The Japanese suffered heavy losses.

After four days of fighting, the Japanese withdrew from Midway on June 7. In the attempt to invade U.S. territory, Japan lost nearly 300 aircraft, all four of its aircraft carriers, and 3,500 troops.

9. But they sank one U.S. aircraft carrier.

A Japanese torpedo attacked the U.S. aircraft carrier Yorktown during the Battle of Midway. Although Japan ultimately lost the Battle of Midway, it destroyed numerous U.S. aircraft and warships, including destroyers and the aircraft carrier Yorktown.

10. It was a turning point in the Pacific.

Since Pearl Harbor, the United States had been on the defensive in the Pacific theater. However, after the Battle of Midway, the roles of Japan and the United States were essentially reversed: Japan spent much of the rest of the war defending Pacific territory, not attacking it.
