What actually sets a fender specification

A fender is selected from berthing energy, not from the size of the ship. The calculation starts with the vessel's displacement and its approach velocity, then corrects for the mass of water dragged along with the hull, the eccentricity of the approach, the softness of the hull and the shape of the berth.

Approach velocity enters the sum as a square, which is why it dominates everything else. Halving the speed at which a ship touches the berth quarters the energy the fender has to absorb, and that is why tug assistance and a berthing aid system count as part of the fender design rather than as extras.

PIANC, the World Association for Waterborne Transport Infrastructure, publishes the fender design guidance that port authorities and consultants specify against. Its method is what turns a berthing energy figure into a fender type, a rubber grade and a panel size.

The second constraint is hull pressure. A fender can absorb the right energy and still damage a ship if the reaction is concentrated over too small an area, so the panel is sized to keep the pressure inside the limit for the ship type. That limit is lower for a large tanker than for a general cargo ship.

Where pneumatic fender demand comes from

Pneumatic fenders float, and they work between two ships rather than between a ship and a quay. That single difference explains why they form a separate segment: they exist mainly for ship-to-ship transfer and for lightering, where a terminal's draught cannot take a fully laden vessel alongside.

OCIMF and the International Chamber of Shipping publish the ship-to-ship transfer guidance the tanker trades follow, which treats fender selection and the mooring arrangement as one problem. ISO publishes the standard for floating pneumatic rubber fenders, covering initial internal pressure, guaranteed energy absorption and hydrostatic testing.

Failure is rarely the rubber itself. Chains, shackles and weight chains on panel fenders wear and part first, and a fender hanging on a failed chain is a docking hazard rather than a protection. Exposed rubber also cracks under ultraviolet light and ozone over time.

Over-compression is the other common fault. A ship that berths faster than the design velocity drives the fender past its rated deflection, and the damage shows up as a permanent set in the rubber and a reaction that no longer matches the performance curve the berth was designed around.
