How do ships generate and power?
A ship is like a floating city with all the advantages of a land-based city. Like a traditional city, a ship also needs all the basic services required for life on board; the most important of which is electricity. This article will explain how ships are powered.
Power Generation on Board
The main engine and the AC generator generate the ship's electricity. To achieve this, the ship uses an AC generator. The working principle of the generator is that when the magnetic field around the conductor changes, an electric current is induced in the conductor.
Generator
The generator consists of a set of fixed conductors wound around an iron core. This fixed part is called the stator. A rotating magnet, known as the rotor, rotates within the stator, generating a magnetic field. When the rotor rotates due to mechanical input, the magnetic field passes through the conductors, generating an induced electromagnetic force.
The magnetic field is generated by induction (in brushless generators) and by winding a DC rotor with slip rings and brushes. Here are some key points to consider about power on board:
Three-phase alternating current (AC) is preferred over direct current (DC) because it can provide more power for the same volume.
Three-phase AC is preferred over single-phase AC because it consumes more power and if one phase fails, the other two phases continue to operate.
Power Distribution on Board
Power distribution on board must be efficiently supplied to various parts of the ship. This is achieved through the onboard power distribution system.
Busbar Inspection and Maintenance
The onboard power distribution system comprises various components to ensure safe power distribution and system operation. These components include:
Ship generators which consist of prime movers and AC generators.
The main switchboard is a metal enclosure that receives power from diesel generators and supplies it to various machines.
Busbars act as carriers, allowing loads to be transferred from one point to another. Circuit breakers act as switches that can be disconnected in unsafe conditions to prevent failures and accidents. Fuses are safety devices for machinery.

Transformers are used to step up or step down voltage. To supply power to the lighting system, step-down transformers are used in the power distribution system.
In the power distribution system, the operating voltage is usually 440 volts.
In some large installations, the voltage can reach 6,600 volts.
Large auxiliary machinery is supplied at high voltage through circuit breakers.
For smaller power supplies, fuses and miniature circuit breakers are used.
The power distribution system consists of three wires that can be isolated with a neutral or ground wire. An isolated system is preferred over a grounded system because important machinery, such as the steering gear , may stop working in the event of a ground fault.
Emergency power supply
An emergency or backup power supply system is also available if the ship's main power generation system fails. An emergency power supply ensures the continued operation of critical machinery and systems on board. Batteries, emergency generators, or both can provide a backup power supply in the event of an emergency.
The emergency power supply must be sufficient to maintain the operation of the ship's important systems, such as:
a) Steering system
b) Emergency fire extinguishing and cargo unloading systems
c) Watertight doors
d) Fire extinguishing system
e) Navigation lights and emergency lights
f) Communication and alarm systems
The emergency generator is usually located outside the ship's engine room. This is mainly to prevent emergencies where the engine room cannot be accessed. The switchboard in the emergency generator room supplies power to various critical pieces of machinery.
